September is harvest month: still warm, the wine programme at its peak, and the villages celebrating before autumn. Here’s a practical overview — with links to dates, times and details in Madeira Unlocked.
What to expect in September
Three things shape the month:
- Wine and harvest — the Madeira Wine Festival runs until 13 September
- Village festas (arraiais) — music, food stalls and religious celebrations in Ponta do Sol, Faial and Seixal
- Concerts and nightlife — from MEO Sons do Mar to KAUĒ, Carvão em Brasa, Pride and ILLUZION

Wine harvest season
The Madeira Wine Festival is September’s main anchor: a cultural and harvest programme around Madeira wine, from 23 August to 13 September.
Madeira Wine Lounge — Funchal (until 13 September)

The easiest way in is the Madeira Wine Lounge on Praça do Povo, most evenings 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM.
- tastings from 11 producers (Madeira wine plus white, red and rosé wines from the island)
- local food
- mainly concerts (regional groups and bands)
- masterclasses: short, guided tastings of Madeira wine and the island’s other wines

Estreito’s Wine Harvest Festival — Câmara de Lobos (5 September)
Harvest day in Estreito.
If you only join one harvest day, make it Estreito. On Saturday morning the village of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos recreates the vintage:
- grape picking you can join
- ethnographic parade with folklore groups
- traditional grape treading (pisa) in a stone wine press (lagar) — visitors can step in
- regional food, wine and live music
This is the hands-on side of the Wine Festival.
Grape and Farmer Festival — Porto da Cruz (5–6 September, cancelled)
Cancelled for 2026. The Casa do Povo do Porto da Cruz has called off the Grape and Farmer Festival this year, saying a lack of funding and public support made it impossible to hold the event “with its usual dignity and scale.”
In a typical year this is the north-coast harvest festa in Porto da Cruz — Madeira’s “land of wine” — with a farmers’ market, wine culture and an ethnographic parade. Organisers hope to bring it back in a future year.
Blandy’s Wine Festival — Funchal (1–4 September)
A smaller, ticketed programme inside the wider festival: harvest by night, workshops, new releases and tastings at Blandy’s Wine Lodge and Quinta de Santa Luzia.
Start here: Blandy’s Wine Festival (1 September). Later days include heritage workshops, a wine-pairing dinner and a “make your own Madeira wine” session. The four-day Premium Ticket is limited.
Concerts in the vineyards (5–13 September)
Sunset concerts with tastings — Concertos da Vinha ao Lagar — at estates such as Quinta das Vinhas, Quinta do Furão, Vinhas do Tico and the Wine Museum in Arco de São Jorge. Capacity is small; check the official Wine Festival programme and our Wine Festival series.
First weekend: Ponta do Sol and concerts in Funchal
Festas da Ponta do Sol (4–6 September)

The big concert nights of the Festas da Ponta do Sol in September:
- Friday 4 Sep — Going Back, DJ Oxy, DJ Andy Lux and Nuno Ribeiro
- Saturday 5 Sep — Banda Fixe, Quinta do Bill and DJ Sil
- Sunday 6 Sep — Cloud9 and Catarina Melim & Banda
Classic arraial: seafront stage, food stalls, families earlier on, concerts later. Organised by Ponta do Sol Municipal Council.
MEO Sons do Mar — Parque de Santa Catarina (4–5 September)
Two ticketed nights of Portuguese pop overlooking Funchal Bay. Organised by PEV Entertainment.
- Friday 4 Sep — Bárbara Tinoco, Elisa
- Saturday 5 Sep — Nininho Vaz Maia, Akoustic Junkies
8:00 PM – 11:30 PM. Tickets currently around €16–27.
MEO and the Festas da Ponta do Sol fall on the same weekend. If you want both, you can split the nights — Friday in Funchal and Saturday on the south coast, for example.
Mid-September: north coast, Faial and Calheta
Seixal Summer Fest (11–13 September)
A three-day end-of-summer festa in Seixal (Porto Moniz): food, music and village atmosphere. The detailed timetable is still to come. Dates: Friday 11 September, Saturday 12 September and Sunday 13 September. Organised by Município do Porto Moniz.
Festas do Faial (11–12 September)
A traditional festa around the parish church in Faial (Santana municipality): philharmonic band, Mass, popular music and a late finish.
- Friday 11 Sep — Nossa Senhora da Natividade & closing programme (from 2:00 PM; Galáxia in the evening)
- Friday 11 Sep — opening night with Miro Freitas (8:00 PM)
- Saturday 12 Sep — Rui Bandeira, fireworks, Mass and DJ until 3:00 AM
Organised by the Confrarias de Nossa Senhora da Graça e do Santíssimo Sacramento.
KAUĒ – Capítulo IV — Casa das Mudas, Calheta (12 September)

Electronic music, live drums, dance and visuals in the museum of contemporary art — one of the island’s most unusual venues. 6:00 PM – midnight, tickets from about €12.
Line-up includes PITA, LI-POLYMER, Nelson Caires, M Da Silva, Ricardo Silva (live drums), Sara Freitas (dance), Cláudia Sardinha (face painting) and Deep Vision (visuals).

Late September: art, a free festival, Pride and a night at the Lido
Islands 2026, Soil & Terra — Funchal (from 21 September)
A contemporary exhibition at Art Center Caravel (Rua de Santa Maria) on soil as memory and living ecosystem, curated by Joze Zyberchema. Evening openings (around 6:00–8:00 PM).

Carvão em Brasa — Quinta Magnólia (25 September)

Fourth edition of this free open-air music festival in the gardens of Quinta Magnólia. Confirmed so far:
- High Fade — the band’s first concert in Portugal
- Dirty Shufflers
From 6:00 PM. Organised by Carvão em Brasa Music Festival.
Madeira Pride — Largo do Socorro, Funchal (26 September)

March and community gathering under the theme “The world we want starts here.” 6:00–8:00 PM, Associação Madeira Pride.
ILLUZION 4th Anniversary — Complexo Balnear do Lido (26 September)

The same Saturday, an electronic night at the Lido: Kokeshi (Lisbon), Steve Lui, Zen and Peet Moss, 6:00 PM – midnight, one dance floor. Organised by ILLUZION.
Pride wraps up in the early evening — there’s still time to stay out at the Lido later the same Saturday.

A simple mix:

If you only have one weekend, 4–6 September is the densest: Wine Festival, harvest day in Estreito, Ponta do Sol and Sons do Mar.
Final thoughts
September still feels like summer, but the calendar turns towards wine, harvest and local festas. You don’t need to see everything — a harvest morning, a village night and a concert, and you’ll have a very Madeiran month.
