Screenings Funchal: First Image: David Lynch + Dumbland

In this documentary directed by Pierre-Henri Gibert, David Lynch looks back on the early years of his life and the journey that led him from painting to filmmaking. Through an intimate conversation, Lynch reflects on his childhood, artistic influences, formative years and the origins of his earliest works, offering a rare insight into the development of his distinctive imagination and creative process. Lynch’s reflections on his artistic journey in First Image find an intriguing counterpart in Dumbland, one of the freest and most irreverent works of his career. Originally created for DavidLynch.com, the animated series consists of eight episodes following an explosive-tempered man through a daily life dominated by absurdity, violence and dark humour. With deliberately crude drawings and provocative dialogue, Lynch pushes his fascination with caricature and the grotesque to the extreme while exploring the expressive possibilities of digital animation.
