What is the Flower Festival?
The Madeira Flower Festival marks the island's spring each year. Known as Festa da Flor, it turns Funchal into a floral showcase. Exotic flowers from subtropical gardens fill streets and squares, locals create elaborate floral displays — from flower carpets and sculptures to flower-decked floats — and visitors enjoy parades and markets. The event started in 1976 and blends nature, culture and community. The 2026 edition runs from April 30 to May 24, about three and a half weeks.
📅 2026 New Format
This year, the Cortejo Alegórico — the main allegorical flower parade and the festival’s highlight — is split across two Sundays for the first time. Both parades follow Avenida do Mar in Funchal from 4:30pm. Grandstand tickets cost around €30; watching from the street is free.

Main Festivities: April 30 – May 24, 2026
Opening (April 30)
10am: The opening ceremony will take place at Praça do Município, with flower offerings and speeches. Free entry.
Main parades

May 2, 2026: Wall of Hope (Muro da Esperança). Children parade to Praça do Município and are invited to place a flower on the “Wall of Hope”, in a symbolic appeal for Peace. Accompanied by family members, the little ones carry their flowers to fulfil this tradition, dating back to 1979.

The Allegoric Flower Parade (Cortejo Alegórico da Flor) stands as the festival's highlight. It features flower‑decked floats, roughly 1,500 participants in detailed bloom‑inspired outfits, accompanied by live music and choreography on Avenida do Mar. This tradition dates to 1979. For 2026, it will occur twice—May 3 and May 17—for the first time. Fourteen groups will perform across the two parades — seven per day. Each group brings its own float, costumes, music and choreography.

💡 Which parade should you attend? If you can only make one, May 3 is the traditional opening weekend. May 17 has its own set of groups and a distinct atmosphere — not a repeat. If you’re staying for the full festival, both are worth seeing.
Viewing the Parades: Free vs. Paid Options

Free roadside spots along Avenida do Mar: Avenida do Mar is open to anyone. No ticket needed, but get there by 2:30pm to secure good views. A front-row spot means coming hours early.

Reserved grandstand seating: Grandstands sit directly along the parade route — clear sightlines and a seat, without hours of standing in the front row. Tickets cost around €30 per person.

Flower carpets
The flower carpets in Madeira are called tapetes florais: decorative carpets made from fresh flowers, laid in the streets. They’re part of a tradition that began with religious processions and are now one of Madeira’s most famous visual displays.
Throughout the Festa da Flor (April 30 – May 24) they line Avenida Arriaga (Placa Central). They are especially elaborate around the main parade weekends — often laid from 8am by volunteers and associations.

At the Pavilhão da Flor (Largo da Restauração), the Exposição da Flor presents the regional flower competition with the finest blooms from across Madeira.

Concerts and shows

On 9, 16 and 17 May, the flower groups from the allegorical parade perform at the Heliporto / Cais 8 (Pier 8) — costumes and choreography on stage. Pier 8 is the venue, not the organiser. Admission is free; collect tickets from the Tourist Information Office on Avenida Arriaga (subject to capacity).

Madeira Flower Classic (vintage cars): Classic cars decorated with floral arrangements parade along Avenida do Mar, accompanied by live music and hundreds of performers in flower-inspired costumes. The Madeira Flower Classic Auto Parade takes place on 10 May from 4:30pm to 5:30pm, departing from Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro. Full route: Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro → Avenida do Mar (north lane) → Praça da Autonomia → Avenida do Mar (south lane) → Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro → Rotunda Harvey Foster. Exhibition afterwards along Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro. Grandstands are available; tickets are sold on site.

Concertos da Flor (14–17 May): four concerts at landmark spots across the island — taking the festival beyond Funchal.
Markets and extras
Throughout the festival, the Mercado das Flores e dos Produtos Regionais on the Placa Central of Avenida Arriaga offers flowers, regional products, Madeiran crafts and food stalls. Weekends are especially lively.

Logistics for visitors
Getting to Funchal
The Flower Festival is very busy. Avoid bringing your car on parade days, as the main avenue in the centre will be closed.
From the airport, take the AeroBus (€6.50) or a taxi (€20) or Bolt to the centre, 20 min.
If you are already in Funchal, Horários do Funchal buses double up during the festival (€1.95/ride).

Amazonia car park: This is the cheapest car park (€4/day) but it gets full first and is a 20min walk from the Avenida do Mar.

Espaço Insular: €5/day, 5 minutes walk from the Avenida do Mar, but be aware that it closes at 21:00.

Parque do Teatro Baltazar Dias: 500 spots, €2.50/hr, 5min walk to route.

Parque da Ajuda: Larger, €2/hr, 10min uphill. On festival days it is full by 10am, so use it early.
