Looking for the best souvenirs from Madeira? Here are our personal recommendations – from Madeira wine and Bolo de Mel to local art, handmade gifts and authentic Madeiran treats worth bringing home.

If you've fallen in love with Madeira, you're probably asking yourself one question before flying home:

What should I bring back from Madeira?

Of course, you could buy another fridge magnet or a "Madeira" T-shirt at the airport. But the island has so much more to offer.

From world-famous fortified wines and traditional biscuits to local art, handmade ceramics and unique home décor, Madeira is full of souvenirs that will remind you of your trip long after you've unpacked your suitcase.

After living on Madeira for several years, we've discovered plenty of products that we genuinely love ourselves. Some are famous, others are hidden gems that many visitors walk right past.

Here are our favourite souvenirs from Madeira.

1. Madeira Wine – Take Home Your Favourite Bottle

If there's one souvenir that truly represents Madeira, it's Madeira Wine.

Unlike regular wines, Madeira Wine is incredibly long-lasting thanks to its unique production process. Some bottles can be stored for decades without losing their character.

Rather than buying the first bottle you see, we highly recommend joining a wine tasting during your stay. Madeira Wine ranges from dry to intensely sweet, and everyone's favourite is different.

Whether you prefer the nutty notes of a Sercial or the rich sweetness of a Malmsey, tasting a few varieties first makes bringing home the perfect bottle much more rewarding.

Our tip: Don't assume you need to buy your wine at a winery. Many supermarkets on Madeira stock an excellent selection of Madeira Wines, often at very competitive prices.

2. Traditional Biscuits from Fábrica Santo António

If we could recommend just one edible souvenir from Madeira, it would probably be the biscuits from Fábrica Santo António.

Founded in 1893, this historic bakery has been producing traditional Madeiran biscuits for well over a century using many original recipes. Walking into the shop feels almost like stepping back in time.

Among our personal favourites are:

  • Guil's – buttery biscuits with toasted almonds and Madeira sugar cane syrup

  • Broas de Gengibre – light ginger biscuits with a delicate caramel flavour

  • Crispy Sugar Cane Biscuits – wonderfully crunchy biscuits made with Madeira's famous sugar cane syrup

These biscuits travel well, make fantastic gifts and usually don't survive very long once you open the package.

👉 Visit Fábrica Santo António

Founded in 1893, Fábrica Santo António is one of Madeira's most iconic bakeries and a must-visit for traditional biscuits and local treats.

Don't let the simple façade fool you. Step inside and you'll find one of Madeira's most charming traditional bakeries, where recipes have been passed down for generations.

3. Bolo de Mel – Madeira's Famous Honey Cake

No list of Madeira souvenirs would be complete without Bolo de Mel.

Despite its name ("Honey Cake"), it is traditionally made with Madeira sugar cane syrup (Mel de Cana) rather than bee honey. Rich in spices and surprisingly moist, it keeps for weeks and even improves after a few days.

The best part?

It isn't just a Christmas speciality. Locals enjoy it throughout the year.

Our personal favourite is:

👉Ilhopan Tradição – Bolo de Mel

Here's another little insider tip:

You'll often find excellent Bolo de Mel in local supermarkets for significantly less than in souvenir shops or at the airport. In most cases, it's exactly the same product.

4. Don't Buy Bottled Poncha (Here's What to Do Instead)

This recommendation might surprise you.

Many visitors want to take Poncha home after falling in love with Madeira's most famous drink.

Our honest advice?

Don't buy the ready-made bottled Poncha from the supermarket.

We've tried several versions, and none of them come close to the fresh Poncha you'll enjoy in a traditional Madeiran bar. The difference is enormous.

If you'd like to recreate the experience at home, simply buy a bottle of Aguardente de Cana (Madeiran sugar cane rum) and prepare your own Poncha using fresh orange or lemon juice, honey (or sugar) and a stirring stick if you can find one.

That said, we'll be honest once again:

A good white Caribbean rum works just as well.

So unless you specifically want to bring home authentic Madeiran sugar cane rum, you don't actually need to buy anything special to enjoy a great homemade Poncha.

5. Bring a Piece of Madeira into Your Home with wallamadeira

Some souvenirs remind you of your holiday for a few weeks. Others become part of your everyday life.

If you're looking for something truly special, wallamadeira creates handcrafted LED wall art inspired by the island. Each illuminated piece is designed to capture the shape and spirit of Madeira, bringing a warm reminder of your favourite island into your home.

Rather than buying another decorative souvenir that ends up in a drawer, this is something you'll see every single day.

The collection is still growing, and we especially like the clean, minimalist design that fits into almost any living room, office or holiday home.

6. Original Artwork by Carolina Pixel

Some places stay with you forever. Art is one of the most beautiful ways to preserve those memories.

Carolina Pixel is a Madeira-based abstract artist whose colourful paintings are inspired by nature, travel and the island's unique landscapes. Before becoming a full-time artist, she worked as a photographer and content creator, a background that is still visible in her vibrant compositions and attention to detail.

We've had the pleasure of getting to know Carolina personally over the past months, and what impressed us most is the passion she pours into every single piece. Her work isn't created for tourists—it's inspired by the island she now calls home.

Many of her original paintings reflect the colours of Madeira's mountains, ocean and dramatic coastline, making them a meaningful keepsake long after your holiday has ended.

One of the things we admire most about Carolina's work is that her paintings don't simply depict Madeira—they capture how the island feels. Rather than creating postcard-perfect scenes, she transforms the colours, textures and atmosphere of Madeira into expressive artwork that evokes memories every time you look at it.

The best part: if you fall in love with a painting during your visit, international shipping is available, so you don't need to worry about transporting larger artwork home.

7. Contemporary Art from BELA30 Gallery

If you prefer contemporary art, make sure to visit Galeria BELA30 in Funchal.

The gallery showcases carefully curated original works by Wolfgang Lass and Anastasyia Ivanova, two artists whose paintings often reflect Madeira's colours, light and natural contrasts.

Each artwork is completely unique, making it a far more personal souvenir than a mass-produced print.

Whether you're looking for a statement piece for your living room or a smaller painting that reminds you of your favourite island, BELA30 offers something for every taste.

Like many professional galleries, they also offer international shipping if required.

In Madeira Unlocked you’ll also find an exclusive discount for the gallery.

8. LOUR Madeira – Art Inspired by the Island's Quiet Beauty

Some souvenirs capture what Madeira looks like. LOUR Madeira captures what it feels like.

Artist and illustrator Lize-Mari creates intricate hand-drawn illustrations inspired by Madeira's landscapes, wildlife and the rich marine life surrounding the island. Together with Ragna, who transforms these illustrations into beautifully crafted textile products, they create unique souvenirs that celebrate the island in a thoughtful and contemporary way.

One of our favourite details is that every illustration hides little references to Madeira. Depending on the design, you might discover the traditional Santana houses, the Funchal cable car or other iconic landmarks woven into the artwork. It's these thoughtful details that make every piece worth looking at more than once.

Their collection includes fine art prints, tote bags, T-shirts and other carefully designed pieces featuring whales, dolphins, native birds and botanical motifs. Every illustration begins with pen and ink, inviting you to slow down and notice the details that make Madeira so special.

We particularly love the philosophy behind LOUR: taking the time to observe, appreciate and reconnect with nature. It perfectly reflects the slower pace of life that so many people fall in love with when visiting Madeira.

9. Thoughtful Gifts from Lulebo

If you've ever visited one of Madeira's local markets, there's a good chance you've already come across Lulebo.

Founded by designer Sandra, Lulebo is a small creative brand inspired by the beauty, colours and character of Madeira. Every design begins with one of her own ideas and is carefully developed from the first sketch to the finished product. From selecting the materials to choosing the colours and final details, Sandra personally oversees the entire creative process, making every piece a genuine labour of love.

Their collection includes beautifully designed magnets, coasters, cotton bags, jewellery, home fragrances, small games and many other thoughtfully crafted gifts inspired by Madeira.

One of the things we appreciate most about Lulebo is that the products don't feel like typical tourist souvenirs. Instead, they combine contemporary design with Madeira-inspired illustrations and patterns, creating keepsakes you'll genuinely enjoy using long after your holiday has ended.

You'll often find Lulebo at markets such as Santo da Serra Market, but many items are also available online.

If you're looking for beautiful gifts for family and friends—or simply a stylish reminder of your own time on Madeira—Lulebo is one of our favourite recommendations.

10. Handmade Pottery from Local Markets

Not every great souvenir comes from a shop.

Some of our favourite discoveries have been made while wandering through Madeira's local markets.

You'll regularly find talented ceramic artists selling handmade pottery, cups, bowls and decorative pieces inspired by the island.

One artist we particularly enjoy often has a stand near Barreirinha Bar in Funchal, where beautifully crafted ceramics are displayed alongside the ocean.

Since every piece is handmade, no two items are exactly alike.

If you're visiting markets such as Mercado dos Lavradores, Santo da Serra Market or smaller artisan fairs around the island, keep your eyes open—you might discover your own favourite artist.

11. Bring Home a Bolo do Caco

Freshly baked Bolo do Caco is one of Madeira's most beloved specialities. While it's best enjoyed warm with garlic butter at a local restaurant, you can also take it home surprisingly well.

Most supermarkets sell freshly baked Bolo do Caco, making it a delicious edible souvenir. It stays fresh for a few days, especially if you keep it in the refrigerator. For longer storage, simply freeze it and thaw it whenever you're craving a little taste of Madeira. Before serving, warm it in a contact grill, toaster or frying pan until it's crispy on the outside and soft inside.

Our favourite ways to enjoy it?

  • Traditionally with garlic herb butter.

  • As a sandwich for lunch.

  • As a Bolo do Caco pizza topped with cheese, tomatoes and your favourite ingredients.

  • Or even sweet with Nutella for breakfast or dessert.

It may not be the most obvious souvenir, but it's definitely one of the tastiest.

12. Flower Bulbs – A Living Memory of Madeira

Madeira is known as the Island of Eternal Spring, so why not bring a little of that beauty home?

Many local garden centres and markets sell flower bulbs that thrive in warm climates and produce spectacular blooms.

Popular choices include:

  • Agapanthus

  • Amaryllis

  • Lilies

  • Other ornamental flowering plants

Every time they bloom, they'll remind you of your holiday on Madeira.

💡 Good to know: Before travelling, always check your country's regulations regarding the import of plants and bulbs.

13. Mel de Cana – Madeira's Traditional Sugar Cane Syrup

One of Madeira's oldest culinary traditions is Mel de Cana, the island's famous sugar cane syrup.

Unlike regular honey, this rich, dark syrup is made from locally grown sugar cane and has been produced on Madeira for centuries.

It's an essential ingredient in traditional recipes like Bolo de Mel, but it's also delicious on pancakes, waffles, yoghurt or even in marinades and desserts.

If you enjoy cooking, this is one of the most authentic ingredients you can take home.

14. Madeira Spice Mix

Want to recreate the flavours of Madeira in your own kitchen?

Look for Madeira Spice Mix (Mistura de Especiarias), a locally produced seasoning blend that works wonderfully with meat, fish, vegetables and roasted potatoes.

Mistura de Especiarias – Madeira Spice Mix

While every producer has their own recipe, these aromatic spice blends capture many of the flavours you'll discover while dining on the island.

Our tip: You're more likely to find authentic Madeira Spice Mix in smaller local supermarkets and neighbourhood grocery stores than in the large supermarket chains. Keep an eye out for locally produced versions—they're often fresher, more authentic and make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves cooking.

It's lightweight, affordable and easy to pack, making it one of our favourite culinary souvenirs from Madeira.

15. Madeira Embroidery (Bordado Madeira)

Madeira embroidery has been famous around the world since the 19th century.

Handcrafted tablecloths, napkins, runners and decorative textiles showcase the incredible craftsmanship that has become part of the island's cultural heritage.

One of the best places to discover this tradition is Bordal, where you can not only browse beautifully embroidered products, but also join a workshop or take part in one of the daily guided tours to learn more about this unique craft. In Madeira Unlocked you’ll also find an exclusive Bordal discount, plus other local deals across the island.

Even if traditional embroidery isn't your personal style, it's still one of Madeira's most iconic souvenirs and makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who appreciates handmade craftsmanship.

Is bottled Poncha worth buying?

In our opinion, no.

Freshly prepared Poncha is one of Madeira's highlights, but the bottled supermarket versions simply don't compare. If you want to recreate the experience at home, buy a bottle of Aguardente de Cana instead and prepare your own fresh Poncha.
