Madeira Events 2026: Your Guide To What’s On In Madeira And Funchal All Year Round

• Madeira Carnival 2026: the island’s first big tourist event of the year, with themed parties and parades in multiple municipalities.

• Key dates: February 11th – February 22nd

• In Funchal you’ll see the Cortejo Alegórico (main Carnival parade) with hundreds of costumed dancers and themed floats through Funchal’s lower town.

• Madeira Unlocked is hosting its own Cologne Carnival party at the Old City Pub on 12 February from 19:00.

• Hippie Night in Ponta do Sol (16 February 2026): a free open-air party with 60s–80s music at Centro Cultural John dos Passos — a firm highlight of the Carnival programme.

• Local tip: Câmara de Lobos parade (Carnival Monday, 16 February 2026): almost all the groups from Funchal’s big Saturday parade take part — just shorter, easier to follow, and from much closer up. Afterwards the drum bands face off in a friendly contest on the stage by the water, a DJ takes over, and the narrow streets party late into the night. For many locals, the most authentic Carnival experience on the island.

• Travesty Night (Friday in Carnival week; in 2026 on 13 February): men dress as women and vice versa. Barrerinha Bar often hosts a costume contest, and the Old Town pubs fill up for a lively night out.

• Sixteenth Century Market (Mercado Quinhentista): This event, which evokes the historical period of the discovery of the island, has gained a prominent cultural status. Organized by the Municipal Council of Machico, it takes place in Machico’s downtown and offers a number of cultural and musical activities.

• Cherry Festival (Festa da Cereja): The cherry is a fruit whose cultivation predominates in the upper part of the parish of Jardim da Serra, making it an important part of the parish tradition. The festival will showcase concerts and live performances along with a defile. You’ll also be able to try the famous cherries and their derived products.

• Regional Banana Show (Mostra Regional da Banana): honours one of Madeira’s most important agricultural products — the Madeiran banana.

• Sea Week (Semana do Mar): The culture, music and gastronomy, as well as the nautical sports are the motto for the Sea Week. This Festival features a series of activities and games where hundreds of locals of all ages join in to compete. In the evening, the most varied gastronomy takes over, along with live music concerts.

• Madeira Rally (Rali da Madeira): The Madeira Rally 2026, where international drivers compete on difficult terrain, will take place over 3 days, starting with the usual Avenida do Mar special stage in the late afternoon on Thursday.

• Festa dos Fachos: Every year Machico commemorates the old fire-signal system used against pirate attacks. Locals once lit fires on Pico do Facho to warn of invaders. Today, in the last week of August, torches bathe the town in a magical light.
