Updated 19 July 2026: Fee options (including multi-day passes) and the full classified trail list below are aligned with the official SIMplifica booking service. Always confirm prices and availability there before you hike.

If you're dreaming of hiking Madeira’s beautiful levada walks, dramatic coastal trails, ancient forest and want to enjoy views from Madeira's highest peaks, this news is important for you: starting January 1, 2026, some hikes will need to be booked in advance and paid.

For years, you could walk straight onto Madeira's PR trails whenever you wanted. No booking, no fuss. But 2026 brings a new system designed to protect the island's trails from overcrowding, environmental damage and to preserve the experience for everyone. The good news? It's not complicated once you understand it. This guide walks you through every rule you need to know so you can plan your hikes stress-free.

Why Is Madeira Changing Its Hiking System?

Madeira's hiking trails have become a victim of their own success. In 2024, the island welcomed 2.23 million visitors, a record-breaking year.

What does that mean for famous trails like Levada das 25 Fontes and Vereda do Areeiro? By mid-morning, popular levada paths are packed shoulder-to-shoulder with hikers, tour groups, and day-trippers all squeezing down narrow, water-carved channels barely wide enough for two people. Some trails designed for quiet forest walks have become bottlenecks, and parking lots overflow, while other equally beautiful hikes remain hidden gems. It's not just overcrowding—uncontrolled foot traffic has caused visible soil erosion, vegetation damage, and environmental strain on fragile ecosystems.

That's the problem driving Madeira's 2026 reservation system: the island needed a way to spread visitors throughout the day and protect trails that are buckling under the weight of mass tourism.

Rather than close trails, Madeira's government chose to spread visitors out through timed entry slots. This way, the trails stay open but you get a better experience because you're not fighting through crowds.

The system also generates revenue for trail maintenance, signage, and conservation—money that directly protects the island's UNESCO World Heritage Laurissilva forest for future generations.

The Cost: What Will You Actually Pay?

For most tourists hiking independently, the standard fee is €4.50 per person, per trail (ages 13+). Children under 12 are exempt. You pay online via SIMplifica when you book.

Who / optionFee
Independent tourist (most trails, ages 13+)€4.50 per trail
Children under 12Free
Madeira residents (with proof of residency)Free — booking on SIMplifica still required
Tour with certified guide / licensed operator (IFCN agreement)€3 per person (guide pays no personal fee)
PR1 short section (Areeiro ↔ Pedra Rija only — no Pico Ruivo)€4.50
PR1 full (Areeiro → Pico Ruivo, unidirectional from Pedra Rija; includes PR 1.1 & 1.2)€10.50
Combined day rate (2+ trails same day, excludes PR1)€9.00
Combined 3-day rate (2+ trails in 3 days, excludes PR1)€22.50
Combined 7-day rate (2+ trails in 7 days, excludes PR1)€52.50

What “2+ trails” means: Per the IFCN FAQ and SIMplifica, the cheaper combined rate applies when you book two or more classified trails within that period. It is not unlimited access — you still need a date and time slot for each trail. PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro) is entirely excluded, including the short Pedra Rija section, and is always charged separately.

Notes from SIMplifica: There is currently no separate button for day/multi-day rates — pick the trails you want and the system applies the best price automatically. The reduced €3 operator rate is only for economic operators with a valid IFCN agreement — not for independent self-payers.

The bottom line: A solo hike on a standard trail costs €4.50. A couple’s hike costs €9. A family of four with two adults and two under-12s still pays €9. The fee funds conservation and trail upkeep, not profit.

Which Trails Require Reservations and Payment?

Not every footpath needs a booking — only the classified PR trails (Percursos Pedestres Classificados / Percursos Recomendados) managed by the IFCN. Non-PR paths and free alternatives are generally outside this system.

How to Book Your Hike: Step-by-Step

The process is simpler than you might think, but it does require planning ahead.

Step 1: Create a SIMplifica account

Visit the official SIMplifica platform (simplifica.madeira.gov.pt) and create an account. You'll need:

  • A valid email address

  • Your full name and ID details

  • A password

This same account works for all your hikes, so you only need to set it up once.

Step 2: Choose your trail and date

Log in to SIMplifica and browse available trails. Select the trail you want to hike and the date you plan to go.

Pro tip: Book as early as possible. During summer (July–August) and around Christmas/New Year holidays, popular trails can fill up 2–3 weeks in advance.

Step 3: Select your 30-minute time slot

The system shows available time slots throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset, in 30-minute blocks.

You're not locked into starting the hike at exactly 8:00 AM—the slot simply marks your entry window. But don't show up too late; you need enough daylight to safely complete the trail. Most levadas take 2–4 hours depending on difficulty but some will be much longer.

Step 4: Enter visitor details

Register all hikers in your group. This is mandatory regardless of age.

Step 5: Pay online

Add your tax number and country if you wish so, then complete the payment (€4.50 per person, or the applicable fee) using your card.

Step 6: Keep your confirmation

You'll receive a digital confirmation. Save it to your phone and have it ready during your hike. IFCN staff may ask to see proof of payment, especially on high-demand trails like PR1.

Important: Book at Least 24 Hours in Advance

The system requires you to book at least 24 hours before your hike. Ideally, book even earlier.

If you show up without a reservation? You'll be asked to book an available time slot on the spot using your own device, assuming slots are still available. But why take the chance? Booking ahead ensures you get your preferred time and trail.

What If You Need to Reschedule or Cancel?

You can reschedule your hike, but with conditions:

  • Contact the SIMplifica call centre before your scheduled date

  • You can change to a different time or date on the same trail

  • You cannot change to a different trail (unless that trail is officially closed due to weather or maintenance)

Refunds are rare and complex:

  • Refunds are only given if you cancel for "duly justified reasons"

  • Even then, administrative and bank fees (€1.68 + 3.36%) are deducted

  • Refunds are not available for cancellations on the same day or after your scheduled date

Bottom line: Once you book, plan to go. If the weather turns bad or the trail is closed, contact SIMplifica and explain your situation; they'll help you reschedule.

Tips for a Smooth Hiking Experience in 2026

  • Plan your hikes in Madeira Unlocked. The app covers both PR trails (the classified routes that need a SIMplifica booking) and a dedicated Non-PR category for free alternatives outside the reservation system. Every trail comes with a detailed description — difficulty, what to expect, practical tips — plus links out to AllTrails or Wikiloc when you want GPS tracks or offline maps. Use it to compare options before you commit a booking.
  • Book popular PR trails early, especially in summer and holiday periods — peak slots fill fast. If the big-name routes are full (or you simply prefer quieter paths), switch to Non-PR alternatives in the app instead of improvising on the day.
  • Arrive on time. Don't assume your 30-minute slot gives you flexibility. Arrive with enough time to start your hike within that window.
  • Check weather before you go. Madeira's weather can change fast, especially in the mountains. If rain or clouds are heavy, you can reschedule.
  • Bring proof of payment on your phone. A screenshot of your SIMplifica confirmation is enough. Digital proof is preferred.
  • Plan your route length based on daylight. Night hiking on Madeira's trails is dangerous — choose trails you can finish comfortably before sunset.
  • Choose a small rental car with a decent engine — preferably automatic. Narrow mountain roads get more stressful if you’re still driving when darkness sets in.
  • For official notices and bookings: use the IFCN website for closures and weather-related trail updates, and SIMplifica to reserve and pay.

Should You Still Hike Madeira in 2026?

Yes, absolutely.

Will it feel slightly different because you're booking in advance? Sure. But here's what you're actually getting in exchange:

  • Less crowded trails – Fewer people squeezed onto narrow levadas means more space, fewer near-misses, and better photo opportunities

  • Better trail conditions – Reservation fees fund maintenance and signage, so trails stay safe and well-marked

  • Protected forests – Money goes directly to conserving Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage Laurissilva forest, ensuring it's pristine for future hikers

  • A more intentional experience – When you book ahead, you're more thoughtful about which trails suit you, rather than wandering aimlessly

  • Madeira's levadas, veredas, and mountain trails are still some of Europe's most spectacular hiking experiences. The 2026 system isn't designed to discourage visitors—it's designed to help everyone, including the trails themselves, thrive.
