The Ribeira da Janela power station was built in 1965. It is the only plant that, all year round, leads the water straight into the sea, unused for irrigation and the drinking-water supply. It is a purely hydroelectric station, with no way to pump the water back up.
The Ribeira da Janela powerhouse is in the village of Ribeira da Janela, just under 2 km east of Porto Moniz, at 11 metres.
The pressure pipe splits into 2 branches before the generator house and drives 2 turbines and 2 generators.
Annual energy production is ca. 8 GWh; the capacity is 3 MW.
The 1149 m pressure pipe is fed from a storage reservoir at Lamaceiros, at 410 metres.
That in turn takes its water from the 16,6 km Levada da Ribeira da Janela, which starts at 427 metres.
