Water that shaped Madeira

For centuries, levadas have shaped Madeira’s landscape. These historic water channels carry water from rainfall-rich areas to farmland, settlements and other places of use.

What began as a local answer to water supply grew into a wide network of channels, tunnels and waterworks. Many stretches pass through laurisilva forest, steep cliffs and tunnels — often alongside a path used for maintenance and walking.

Daniel’s extraordinary levada directory

Over many years, Daniel studied historical sources, compared maps and explored numerous levadas himself. His collection documents well-known watercourses as well as little-researched ones.

It is not only about walking routes, but also about history, technical context and preserving a distinctive part of Madeira’s cultural heritage.
