Area

Serra de Água

Length

1 km

Madrei

Ribeira da Fajã das Éguas N 32°44.29 W 17°02.079 ca. 720 m a.s.l.

Course

From the Madre below a fine waterfall, first quite littered and piped, along the south-western and western side of the Ribeira da Fajã das Éguas valley. A quite exposed spot with railings; here the levada is led vertically over a short waterfall. This spot can be bypassed locally.

Shortly before the end it is exposed again. Here too a waterfall drops between the rocks to the lower level, and that can also be bypassed by a detour a few metres before the waterfall. Shortly before the characteristic 3 sheds above Eira da Moura, the levada is led through a cutting in the ground onto the west side of the lombo. The levada's collecting basin is there.

End

Sítio da Eira da Moura ca. 350 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Small levada for irrigating the fields above Fajá dos Vinhaticos

Access

  • From the track to Fajã das Éguas there is now clearly a new track to the Madre and across the stream

  • Path from Eira da Moura

Condition

The Madre is reached by a track, already half destroyed again, from the large drinking-water reservoir in Faja das Eguas, or possibly from the bridge further down in the stream.

Mostly quite narrow and on steep ground, in places also exposed and secured with a railing
