N 32°45.7633 W 16°48.400 ca. 285 m a.s.l., Poco do Arvoredo

The inflow to the Madre comes by a stream that is fed further up by a pipe. That pipe leaves a terminal branch of the Levada da Portela which ends on the Estrada Florestal da Serra Das Funduras.

Course

From the Madre, first against the fall of the valley to the stream, a crossing of the stream, then more or less parallel to and south of the road that leads up from Larano to the cable car and on which you arrive at the end of the walk from the Boca do Risco to Porto da Cruz. After the road crossing the levada swings north and runs west along the cliff edge to the end in a reservoir; after that there are still further small terminal branches

End

Reservoir above Larano ca. 170 m a.s.l.; from here there are still several terminal branches

Function and use

Supplying the fields around Larano

Access

  • Path from the road to the cable car, a few metres west of the cable car

  • Crossing with the road in Larano

  • Various paths from Larano, the Caminho do Boqueirão and the Caminho da Praia do Lorano

Condition

A well maintained path, in places a little narrow around the Madre

Remarks

Walking the levada combines perfectly with the north-coast walk from the Boca do Risco to Porto da Cruz
