Archival documentation — not a current hiking recommendation. Source file on danishome.ch last modified: 19 February 2024

Area

Ponta do Sol/Southwest

Length

2,3 km

Year built

probably between 1875 and 1920

Madrei

Ribeiro Frio (a tributary of the Ribeira da Ponta do Sol) N 32°43.300 W 17°04.250 ca. 750 m a.s.l.

Course

From the Madre the way is at first somewhat exposed and overgrown, in places over exposed levada walls; then the path is wider and mostly cleared. You come to the access path from Jangao.

After that it is a little steeper, on a narrow but not dangerous path, to the intermediate reservoir.

From here it is very exposed below a rock wall, then a little narrow as far as the path towards the Levada Nova da Ponta do Sol. From here it is easy to walk as far as the end on the Estrada Nova da Lombada.

End

North of Jangao ca. 600 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Irrigation of the area above and west of Jangao

Access

The easier access follows the new gravel track from the Reservatorio do Jangao. There are also trodden paths across the terraces, starting from the approach road to the Reservatorios do Jangao. Access from the Levada Nova da Ponta do Sol is also possible, as is a traverse from the road between Lombada and Jangao.

The old access paths from the gravel track are all overgrown.

Condition

Somewhat exposed, and overgrown in places

Remarks

Thanks to the western access paths from the Levada Nova da Ponta do Sol, the road to Jangao and the track from Jangao, it can be planned as a circuit.
