Madrei

Ribeira de Santiago N 32°42.710' W 17°06.368' ca. 580 m a.s.l.

The exact place of the Madre is hard to pin down. A few metres upstream the Ribeira de Santiago is almost completely dammed by the Madre of the Levada do Lombo de Sao Joao, and the water is led into the first distribution hut. From there the Levada do Lombo de Sao Joao continues, but a side levada is also fed into the Ribeira de Santiago. The waterfall from that levada, though, lies clearly below the Levada dos Castanheiros.

A small levada along the connecting path to the Levada dos Castanheiros is also tied in, but it was dry when we were there.

The first metres of the Levada dos Castanheiros also lie a little above where the connecting path meets the Ribeira de Santiago.

The levada proper only begins later, fed from a pipe that cannot be followed.

This pipe may also start at the Madre of the Levada do Lombo de Sao Joao.

In any case the Levada dos Castanheiros was dry when we visited.
