Hidden beach in Caniço

Tucked away near the Lido Mar Hotel in Caniço, this is the kind of swimming spot you’d probably never find unless someone told you about it. There’s no tourist infrastructure and you’ll rarely see visitors here – instead, it’s mostly locals coming for a swim in the clear Atlantic water. The surroundings are wild and largely untouched, which is exactly what makes the place interesting. Don’t expect a perfectly maintained bathing area, though: unfortunately, you may come across some litter around the spot. We think it’s worth knowing this beforehand rather than arriving with the wrong expectations. If you’re looking for a local swimming experience away from Madeira’s popular beaches, bathing complexes and tourist crowds, this is a very different side of the island to discover.
