Mercado de Santa Cruz
About this tip
Right by the seafront in the centre of Santa Cruz, this small municipal market feels a little like a local, much smaller version of Funchal’s famous Mercado dos Lavradores – and with far fewer tourists.
Inside, you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, regional products, a few souvenirs and a small fish hall where locals come to buy freshly caught fish at remarkably good prices. It’s not a big market, but that’s part of its appeal: this is still very much an everyday local market rather than a tourist attraction.
The building itself dates back to 1962 and is also worth a closer look, with its modernist architecture and two ceramic panels depicting traditional Madeiran fishing and agriculture. There are also public toilets here, making it a useful stop while exploring Santa Cruz or spending time at the nearby beach.
For us, it’s a nice little glimpse into everyday Madeira – especially if you’re curious to see a local market beyond the much better-known one in Funchal.
