Mercado dos Lavradores
About this tip
The Mercado dos Lavradores (farmers' market) is a market hall built in Funchal in 1940, where fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish are sold every day except Sundays and public holidays. With a sales area of 9600 square meters and 122 stalls, it is one of the tourist attractions in Funchal. It is undoubtedly beautiful and the fish market in particular is always worth a visit, but there are a few things you should bear in mind to avoid falling for dubious products and overpriced tourist prices. It is best to shop there on Fridays or Saturdays. There are stalls set up by local farmers in the inner courtyard (good value for money). In the fish hall you can get fresh fish at good prices in the mornings, for example the local deep-sea fish “Espada”. You should avoid the stalls with exotic fruit.
