Penha de Águia – The Hike Everyone Knows… and the One Almost Nobody Has Seen
Overview
I want to tell you a story today …
Penha de Águia – the Eagle Rock – is one of Madeira’s most iconic landmarks. You see it from everywhere along the north coast. Massive, steep, almost unreal.
There is the “normal hike”, already not a PR trail, already a bit more adventurous than most. But then there is another side of Penha de Águia. A side almost nobody knows. A side that doesn’t show up on maps, on AllTrails, or in typical travel guides. And that’s exactly what this story is about.
What is Penha de Águia?
Penha de Águia literally means “Eagle Rock”, and once you stand in front of it, the name makes sense.
This massive volcanic formation rises steeply between Porto da Cruz and Faial, separating the two regions like a natural fortress. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, it stands isolated, with near-vertical walls in many sections. For centuries, it wasn’t just a landmark, it was part of everyday life.
Why There Are Hidden Paths All Over Madeira
Before roads existed, Madeira was connected by a dense network of footpaths: narrow, exposed, and often carved directly into cliffs. People used these paths daily: farmers reaching remote fields, shepherds guiding goats and sheep, locals connecting villages across impossible terrain.
These paths are often called “caminhos antigos” or “veredas antigas” — ancient routes that today are mostly forgotten. Some became official PR trails. Most didn’t. And that’s where things get interesting.
Because if you look closely, or if you have the right information, you’ll still find traces of them. Fading lines across steep slopes. Half-collapsed paths. Passages that shouldn’t exist.
We even work with an old military map from the 1930s, trying to understand how this island once functioned before modern infrastructure. And it’s mind-blowing how connected everything used to be — even the most remote cliffs.
The Idea – Finding the Caves of Penha de Águia
My friend Pierre, Sir Pierre, as we call him, lives in Porto da Cruz. He looks at Penha de Águia every single day from his window. And at some point, he started asking the same question we all eventually ask:
“What’s actually up there?”
One evening, in a small local bar called Katrepas, we heard something that changed everything. An older man mentioned that there used to be different ways up the rock. Not just the known paths, but routes leading into caves.
The lapas of Penha de Águia.
And just like that, Pierre had a new mission.
The Search – A Path That Doesn’t Exist
We went there again. And again. And again. Pierre had already explored the area multiple times. I joined later, trying to understand where such a path could possibly exist. Because standing below these cliffs, it feels impossible.
There is no path.
No visible line.
Nothing.
And yet, we knew something had to be there. We started searching along steep slopes, moving across unstable terrain, trying to “read” the mountain. Looking for old signs. Broken stones. Slight indentations.
At times, we thought we found it. At times, we lost it again.
We used ropes in sections. Cleared parts of what looked like an ancient path. Reconstructed fragments step by step.
This wasn’t hiking anymore.
This was exploration.
The Passada Through the Caves
And then we found it.
A narrow passage. Carved into the rock. Leading through caves and along exposed sections of the cliff. The kind of path that makes you stop and think:
“How did people ever walk here?”
This passage is known locally as the Passada da Diana.
The story goes that over 50 years ago, a dog named Diana fell from this path — a tragic moment that gave the route its name. And standing there, you understand why.
This is not a normal trail. This is one of those old Madeiran paths that were built out of necessity — not for comfort, not for safety, but because people had no other choice.
Reality Check – This Is Not a Hike
Let’s be very clear: this route is not doable for normal hikers.
It is:
Extremely exposed
Partially collapsed
Technically demanding
Dangerous without proper equipment
Even for experienced hikers, this is not something you should attempt without climbing skills and gear.
We explored this route over more than 10 attempts. And yes, we made it.
People from Porto da Cruz reached out to us. Some congratulated us. Some were surprised that it was even still possible.
And honestly, we were proud. But also very clear about one thing:
👉 This is not a route we can or will share.
It is no longer a safe or sustainable path.
The Views Everyone Asks About
The funny part?
People keep asking us where those insane photos were taken.
The truth is:
You don’t need to go there to experience Penha de Águia.
Most of the iconic views are actually accessible from above, from the normal hiking routes and viewpoints. And that’s exactly what we recommend.
The Real Hike – Penha de Águia Traverse
There is a proper way to experience this mountain. A route that still feels adventurous, still off the beaten path, but is actually doable.
The traverse from Porto da Cruz to Faial takes you:
Through steep forest sections
Along narrow paths
Up to incredible viewpoints
It’s not a PR trail, which means:
Fewer people
Less infrastructure
More authentic experience
But still manageable for experienced hikers.

Final Thought
Penha de Águia is not just a mountain.
It’s a reminder of what Madeira used to be — connected by impossible paths, shaped by people who moved through terrain we can barely imagine today. We found one of those paths. We walked it.
But some places are not meant to become trails again. And that’s exactly what makes them special.
