Seixal Black Sand Beach
About this tip
Seixal Beach is best known for its dramatic setting: black sand, the Atlantic and the steep green mountains of Madeira’s north coast rising behind it. Looking towards the cliffs, it really is a beautiful spot and easy to see why the beach has become so popular.
That said, we think it’s worth coming with realistic expectations. Seixal is no longer a hidden gem and can get pretty busy, especially around midday and during the summer months. And while the view towards the mountains is spectacular, the other side of the beach is bordered by a harbour wall and breakwater. So if you’re imagining an untouched black sand beach with completely open views across the ocean in every direction, that’s not quite what you’ll find here.
One detail we particularly like is the small waterfall right by the beach, which you can use as a natural shower after your swim. There are also regular showers, a bar and other basic facilities nearby.
If you want a calmer experience, come earlier in the day. Seixal is also an easy stop to combine with Porto Moniz or other places along the north coast – and despite its popularity, the impressive mountain backdrop still makes it well worth stopping for a swim.
