Course

After it had been pouring at the place where we had originally meant to walk, we came to Cova Grande looking for a bit of sun. The weather here was perfect, so off we went!

We soon gave up the attempt to descend from the road to the Levada da Bica da Cana along the Levadinha da Serra: everything here is overgrown with broom and brambles. So the small detour via the road, and then against the flow on the Levada da Bica da Cana, newly restored after the fires.

The views towards Cascalho are impressive, and above us the wind turbines turned without pause.

Although we already knew the whole levada, we enjoyed the sun and the views.

Over the levada steps we finally came to the waterfall, which actually serves as the real Madre. What is incredible here is that all the water is taken, and a few hundred metres further down a huge amount of water is already plunging into the Cascalho again.

From the waterfall the levada is dry; the old Madre is in effect no longer in use.

After a short rest at the Levada da Serra we climbed the new footpath PR27 as far as the new Miradouro do Cascalho. Nicely done, and a fantastic all-round view!

On a little, pathless, back to the PR27, and the climb to the wind turbine on the Fonte do Juncal. 2 showing-off photos on the trig point....
