The Calheta Inverno power station was built in 1992 so that water which had passed through the Calheta power station, and was not used for irrigation or the drinking-water supply, could be used to generate electricity.
The Calheta Inverno powerhouse is in Calheta, on the Ribeira da Calheta, at 13 metres.
The pressure pipe drives 1 turbine and 1 generator. After the turbine the water is led into the sea.
Annual energy production is ca. 20 GWh; the capacity is 7.3 MW.
The turbine is fed by a pressure pipe 3.1 km long.
It is supplied from a storage reservoir at Lombo do Salão, west of Calheta power station 1, at 650 metres. The reservoir is open and holds 20'000 m3 of water.
That in turn takes its water from the 1,8 km section of the Levada Nova.
In summer the water is passed on through the forebay into the Levada Nova; in winter the surplus water is led into the pressure pipe.
