Levada das Ginjas
Also known as Levada da Passada
Archival documentation — not a current hiking recommendation. Source file on danishome.ch last modified: 1 April 2022
Area
Ginjas, Sao Vicente
Length
4 Km (ursprüngliche Gesamtlänge), heute sind noch etwa 650 Meter begehbar
Madrei
-
formerly: Ribeira do Passo N 32°47.100 W 17°03.630 ca. 530 m a.s.l. (near the waterfall of the Ribeira do Passo, which can be seen from afar)
-
today: pipe from the Levada da Faja do Rodrigues N 32°47.075 W 17°03.050 ca. 460 m a.s.l.
Course
From the Ribeira do Passo, crossing of the path that climbs from the Madre of the Levada do Lanço to the Levada da Faja do Rodrigues; later, crossing of the path that led up from Lanço to the Levada do Lanço and, formerly, on to the stream barrage east of the Caldeirao of the Levada da Faja do Rodrigues. The whole stretch is no longer in use today and is impassable (fallen trees and landslides).
The new Madre is a plastic pipe that runs into the levada bed from above (a spring, a stream, or a branch off the Levada da Faja do Rodrigues). From here, first through the forest, over terraces no longer cultivated, to fields thick with growth, and at the end a feed to a water reservoir.
End
Ginjas ca. 440 m a.s.l., formerly 200 metres further on, below the ER 208
Function and use
Irrigation of the area around Ginjas
Access
Crossing with the ER-208
Condition
Easy from Ginjas to the current Madre; after that increasingly hard going, ruined, overgrown, and at some point going any further no longer makes sense
Remarks
An unspectacular, short walk through green terraces, with fine views into the Sao Vicente valley
