About this tip

The Santa Maria de Colombo is a faithful replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship. The ship was built on Madeira in the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos and is now used for regular trips along the island’s south coast. Construction began in 1997 under the direction of Robert Wijntje, together with local craftsmen, and was completed in 1998. In the same year, the ship was presented at Expo 98 in Lisbon, where it attracted a large number of visitors within a short period of time. Today, the Santa Maria de Colombo operates regular sailing trips. These take place in the morning and in the afternoon and offer the opportunity to experience the Atlantic on board a historically inspired sailing ship. The experience is particularly well suited for families and for anyone who wants to discover Madeira from the sea and has an interest in maritime history and traditional shipbuilding.
