Levada do Bom Sucesso

Also known as Levada do Bom Sucesso 1

Archival documentation — not a current hiking recommendation. Source file on danishome.ch last modified: 2 April 2022

Area

Monte/Funchal

Length

6,6 Km

Year built

1850, initially only a little water; from 1910 new springs in the Montado dos Lourais were bought in as well

Madrei

Montado dos Loiros N 32°41.800 W 16°54.000 ca. 1020 m a.s.l.

Course

Along the ER-201 (Caminho dos Pretos)

End

North of Quinta do Pomar, Choupana ca. 750 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Supplying the area around Choupana and the northern part of Bom Sucesso

It is also possible that some of the water was released into the Ribeira de S. Martinho, which crosses the lower Levada do Bom Sucesso around the levada bridge. Part of this stream's water is in any case led into the levada today by a pipe just before the levada bridge.

Access

ER-201

Condition

Ruined; it was presumably abandoned for lack of water and because of the construction of the Levada dos Tornos.

There is an old levada bridge around Quinta dos Novelos (see also Caminheiros Anonimos da Madeira)

Remarks

After about a third of the course on the map, the Levada dos Curraleiros meets the ER-201 from the northwest, then branches off again towards Curral dos Romeiros after a few hundred metres.

The Levada da Serra do Faial and the Levada de S. Martinho also end at the end of this levada
