Course

The Madre lies a little downstream of the Madre of the Levada do Pico Furao, below the bridge that carries the path to the fields and on to the high path from the Torrinhas pass to the Pico Ruivo (Cardos ascent: Walk 2013). It runs on the left-hand side of the valley and follows the slope of the Pico da Geada. Function and use

Irrigation of the area around Sitio do Pau Formosa and Faja dos Cardos

Access

By the road from Curral das Freiras to Faja dos Cardos. Various ways up.

Condition

Not built as a walking route, but not dangerous

Remarks

The levada is partly piped and seems to be in use above all in summer. In the inner Curral valley it is possible to make a fine circular walk over the three small levadas (see also the Madeira blog by Issi Fritsch-Hamann).
