Madrei

Ribeira dos Marinheiros N 32°47.210 W 17°11.230 ca. 1150 m a.s.l.

Course

First parallel to the Ribeira dos Marinheiros, at first in tree-heather forest, then at the foot of the Pico da Roseira in tall broom and gorse; crossing of the Riberinho do Pico da Roseira. From here it is piped, and it feeds the large water tank.

From this reservoir, 3 piped end branches towards Sao Lourenco are fed directly. From the reservoir the old levada, which no longer carries water, can still be walked. The water here runs in pipes. First a 170-degree bend and, after a stretch through the forest, the crossing of the Ribeira dos Marinheiros.

Then along the eastern slope of the Lombo dos Marinheiros; here another piped end branch turns off towards Lombada dos Marinheiros. From here the main branch runs through private land! First the broad ridge is crossed and, on the next ridge to the west, it goes south to Achada do Mestre. Crossing of the ER-101, and further south the crossing of the Levada Nova. Shortly after that, the end among the fields

End

Achada do Mestre ca. 600 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Levada supplying the area around Achada do Mestre, Lombada dos Marinheiros and Sao Lourenco

Access

ER-101, gravel tracks from Sao Joao, Levada Nova

Condition

Well kept as far as the reservoir, then partly overgrown

Remarks

An old levada left in a natural state on its upper course, similar to the Levada da Serra da Ponta do Pargo

If you study the old maps, the course from the water reservoir towards Lombada dos Marinheiros matches the end branch of the Levada do Risco or Furado Velho or Velha do Rabacal. Which of the two levadas this section belongs to is unclear.
