Course
Start in Jardim do Mar. Climb along the small levada to the well-preserved watermill (Moinho das Roseiras), then on the PR 20 to Lombo da Rocha and the Hotel Jardim Atlantico. Descend on the PR 19 as far as the crossing towards Maloeira through the small tunnel. Climb and cross to the path that comes down from Maloeira towards the stream bed and the Pico das Bodes, to the miradouro on the Pico das Bodes, climb towards Raposeira do Lugarinho and cross to Raposeira do Serrado. On the Vereda da Velha Escola and the Travessa da Ladeira to the junction with the path that comes down from the Levada Nova, and the Caminho da Pedreira.
If you follow the sign to Sao Lourenco you come onto a wide high path that finally ends at the ER 223. On that road to Sao Lourenco.
Descend on the Caminho de Sao Lourenco, along which the Levada do Paul do Mar also runs piped.
You come back onto the ER 223 and can drop to the Vereda dos Zimbreiros above the Restaurante O Precipio. The entry is here.
Descend on the Vereda dos Zimbreiros to Ribeira das Galinhas. On the way down we spotted a small levada on the other side of the valley, which we explored on the drive back (Levada and miradouro finds).
On to Paul do Mar. Because the tide was high we could not walk the coastal path to Jardim do Mar, so we took a taxi through the tunnel.
Distance: 13.6 km, 920 m of ascent, 920 m of descent
Start: 09.40 Jardim do Mar
End
15.55 Paul do Mar
Condition
The PR 19 and the PR 20 are in good condition.
The climb to Maloeira is a little slippery. The crossing to the west is somewhat overgrown. The descent into the stream bed is extremely slippery — take care.
The crossing to the miradouro and the climb to Raposeira are in good condition.
The Vereda dos Zimbreiros has partly slipped away, and the paving stones are often missing.
Remarks
We explored an alternative link from Raposeira to Sao Lourenco, and a shortcut from the path up to Maloeira to the path down from Maloeira.
