Course
Because I was back so early from my outing to Stonehenge and to the rock gate on the Levada do Lombo do Mouro, I decided on the spur of the moment to finally have a look at the section of the Levada das Rabacas from the Encumeada pass to the long tunnel, which I had never walked before.
From the Encumeada pass on the Canal do Norte as far as the tunnel of the Levada do Norte.
From here, with fine views, through flowering gorse woods to the large stream-control works in the Ribeira da Choca. Through the surprisingly dry short tunnel into the beautiful valley of the Ribeira da Faja das Eguas, with the view to the Crista do Galo. To my favourite levada house, and to the entrance of the long tunnel into the Cascalho.
I also had a quick look at how the path up to the Sergio board starts. All well!
Back through the tunnel, and a short scramble up onto the maintenance paths of the stream-control works. Quite exposed, but well secured.
Back on the levada to the Encumeada pass.
Distance: 8.5 Km, 45 Hm ascent, 45 Hm descent
Start: 14.50 Encumeada pass
End
17.10 Encumeada pass
Condition
The levada is in good condition. In the inner part it is often without wire protection, but always broad.
The stream-control works are well secured, but certainly not a pleasure for everyone!
Remarks
A beautiful levada with changing views, including of Pico Grande and the surrounding heights. In spring, with the gorse in flower, it is dreamlike!
