Levada do Lombo do Mouro

Archival documentation — not a current hiking recommendation. Source file on danishome.ch last modified: 2 April 2022

Area

Ribeira Brava/southwest

Length

8,65 km

Year built

Already mentioned at the end of the 19th century; from 1910 the levada flows over the Lombo do Mouro to the south coast

Madrei

At the rest area on the ER-110 N 32°44.500 W 17°02.850 ca. 1370 m a.s.l., fed by part of the Levada da Serra

Course

Under the ER-110, through this striking rock bar; in the background you can also see the onward course to the Lombo do Mouro house. Up to the rock bar a larger stream joins and is taken into the levada. Before and after the rock bar the levada drops quite steeply, then it continues relatively flat. Just before the Lombo do Mouro house the path from the car park comes down from above (with a Fio); above the Lombo do Mouro house you meet the path to the Sergio board. Onwards, at first very flat with little gradient, across the valley of the Ribeira da Richa, Pico do Folhado, to the saddle at the Rocha do Cabo, where access to the Rocha do Cabo is possible; then it gets steeper over the Lombo, and along the way a gravel track branches off to Furnas and, at the same place, to the Rocha do Cabo. The levada now follows the gravel track more or less, but always clearly separate, with its own easy path. It goes round the next knoll on the east side, while the track goes over the knoll and to the west of it. At the Fonte das Cruzes the levada ends in a large reservoir. Beyond that it is piped, or runs in the roadside ditch, via 2 large terminal branches and many small distribution levadas onto the fields.

End

Faja do Trigo ca. 570 m a.s.l., Pomar de Rocha ca. 500 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Originally built to supply the Sao Vicente valley; today irrigation of the fields around Faja do Trigo and Apresentacao, together with the Levada da Tabua and, further south, with the Levada Nova

Access

Condition

Easy, with a relatively large height difference from the saddle at the Rocha do Cabo to the end
