Madre 3: Waterfall on the side branch of the western branch of the Ribeira da Vargem N 32°45.292 W 17°03.172 ca. 1505 m a.s.l.
Course
On the northern slope of the Paul da Serra, a passage of 4 small side branches of the Ribeira da Vargem (in places one walks unprotected under the waterfalls)
Pinaculo; here a small trodden path branches off to the shelter cave under the Pinaculo
4 further passages of side branches of the eastern branch of the Ribeira da Vargem, reaching the lombo that separates the north side from the Ribeira Brava valley.
Here the levada goes its own way, first south and then over 2 or 3 waterfalls onto the path that gets past this passage with a few steep hairpins, rather to the north of the levada. Part of the water continues down the valley, presumably to the Levada das Rabacas
The path and the levada now go south and approach the ER-110. The path meets the road here; the levada continues a little further until here it disappears under the road. On the other side of the road it continues, and from here the Levada da Serra is called Levada do Lombo do Mouro.
End
North-west of Lombo do Mouro on the ER-105 ca. 1310 m a.s.l.
Function and use
Originally built to supply water to the Sao Vicente valley. From 1910 part of the water is led along the PR-17 and feeds the Levada do Lombo do Mouro. Another part feeds the waterfall that flows into the Levada do Norte Nord in the Folhadal, and the rest pours over a waterfall to the Levada das Rabacas.
