Levada da Terra Chã

Archival documentation — not a current hiking recommendation. Source file on danishome.ch last modified: 27 November 2022

Area

Ponta do Sol/Canhas

Length

ca. 1,2 Km

Madrei

Ribeiro de São João N 32° 41.534' W 17° 6.322' ca. 270 m a.s.l.

Course

After the Madre as far as the crossing with the Caminho de São João. Then below terraces, and unspectacular, until a somewhat exposed spot.

Shortly afterwards it runs well secured, but quite spectacularly, along the upper edge of the terraced retaining works of the ER222. Then on towards the south-east, where it meets the Caminho do Piquinho. It passes under the road and then runs first in the left-hand road ditch, later in the right-hand one, as far as the ER222. There it probably splits and irrigates the surrounding banana terraces.

End

Terra Chã ca. 160 m a.s.l.

Function and use

Irrigation of the fields in Terra Chã

Access

Condition

Mostly easy to walk; a little exposed just before and after the road retaining works.

Remarks

The levada can be combined into a circuit with the 3 higher levadas, the Levada do Lombo de São João, the Levada da Faja, the Levada dos Castanheiros and the Levada das Voltinhas.

The Levada Nova das Canhas and the Levada das Hortas are not far away either!
