PR1.2: Vereda do Pico Ruivo
About this tip
PR1.2 is the shortest official route to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest point at 1,862 metres. Starting at Achada do Teixeira, the trail is around 2.8 km each way, making it a much more accessible way to reach the summit than the longer mountain routes.
The path climbs steadily towards the Pico Ruivo shelter before the final, steeper section to the summit. Most of the route follows a well-established stone and gravel path, but don’t underestimate the climb just because the distance is relatively short. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours of walking for the return trip, depending on your pace and how much time you spend at the top.
When the shelter is open, it’s a nice place to stop for a drink, but bring your own water and supplies as well.
Most importantly, choose your day carefully. Conditions around Pico Ruivo can change very quickly, and the weather at Achada do Teixeira car park can be completely different from what you find higher up. Bring proper footwear and a warm or windproof layer even if it feels mild when you start.
And if the weather plays along, don’t rush back down. The views across Madeira’s central mountain massif are the real reward here – give yourself some time at the summit to enjoy them.
