PR6: Levada das 25 Fontes

The PR6 - Levada das 25 Fontes is considered the most famous waterfall hike in Madeira. Along a historic levada, the trail leads through the lush Laurissilva forest to its absolute highlight: the Lagoa das 25 Fontes, into which 25 springs cascade into an emerald-green basin. It is the combination of mystical forest, rushing water and unique vegetation that makes this tour so special. As the hike is very popular, it is highly recommended to start early in the morning (ideally before 8 a.m.) or in the late afternoon - then the magic of the place unfolds without large crowds. The path is moderate, but can be narrow and slippery in places. If you would like to avoid the climb, use the paid shuttle bus that runs in both directions between the parking lot at Paul da Serra and the highly recommended Rabaçal Nature Spot Cafe. Registration via the SIMplifica portal is also required for the visit (see link under the 'Hikes' section). At Rabacal, there are many different ways to combine the individual levada hikes with their beautiful waterfalls. We have also linked a somewhat more sporty option below, which connects three levadas. On the loop that connects the Levada das 25 Fontes with the Levada do Risco and Levada do Alecrim, you will be rewarded with the 100 m high Risco waterfall and the magical pools of Alecrim.
