Jardim Botânico da Madeira
About this tip
Above Funchal lies the Madeira Botanical Garden, one of the island’s most well-known gardens. Spread across several terraces, more than 2,000 plant species from around the world grow here – from tropical and subtropical plants to endemic species from Madeira and other Atlantic islands.
Particularly striking are the colourful geometric flower beds, which have become one of the island’s most recognisable photo motifs. Between palms, succulents, medicinal plants and rare trees, beautiful views over the city and the Atlantic appear again and again.
The garden was opened to the public in 1960 on the grounds of the historic Quinta do Bom Sucesso and today serves both as a botanical collection and as a place for research, education and relaxed walks.
