Parque Ecológico do Funchal
About this tip
Parque Ecológico do Funchal is located in the mountains north of the city and covers an area of around 1,000 hectares. This large natural area serves primarily to protect Madeira’s native flora and fauna and supports reforestation projects with indigenous Laurissilva species.
At the same time, the park is a popular destination for outdoor activities. Hiking trails, mountain bike routes and canyoning areas lead through a varied mountain landscape with wide views over the island. Despite being close to the city, the surroundings here already feel wild and untouched.
Large parts of the park were destroyed during the severe wildfire of 2016. Since then, extensive reforestation efforts have been underway to restore the island’s native vegetation. Entrance to the park is free.
