Palheiro Gardens

Palheiro Gardens are located on a hillside above Funchal, offering wide views over the bay of the city. The historic garden was created in the 19th century and is considered one of the most elegant gardens on Madeira. Quiet paths lead through different garden areas such as the Rose Garden and the Sunken Garden, passing old trees, flower beds and exotic plants. Along the way, small fountains, ponds and shaded corners appear again and again, fed by mountain springs that flow through the garden. Particularly impressive are the many old trees from different parts of the world – including giant araucarias, Norfolk pines and Californian redwoods. The Tea House at the edge of the garden is a lovely place for a short break with views over Funchal.
